Sooooo Ryan thought it would be fun to do a somewhat fancy meal for a friend of his from high school and his wife. Let me first tell you she is an amazing cook/baker/decorator/homemaker etc etc. This is a small example of how amazing she is-her baby girl was not a week old when she invited us over for a steak dinner with home made rolls! She only has one other child, but she invited all of us over. I just couldn't bring myself to have all of my children in her home so I left two with my in laws. And on our way out the door she handed me a tin of fabulous cinnamon rolls that she had prepared earlier that day!
So honestly I was somewhat intimidated at the task of presenting a meal for them. Since Ryan is usually home later in the evening and supper plans were for six we decided to prepare last night. At 9pm we were busy in the kitchen with Ryan making a very fancy no flour chocolate torte and me pounding chicken for cordon bleu! With all the steps in the process we didn't make it to bed until after midnight. This morning I only had to prepare the morey sauce, twice baked potatoes, glazed carrots, dust and polish the kitchen furniture, china hutch, piano, coffee table, vacuum every room and rug, and wash mirrors! Plus Brayden had piano at 1:30 and we always go to the library on Fridays. No naps today! I was not excited for this night, but when Ryan and his wife Christina came over everything fell right into place. The kids ate earlier and wanted to enjoy their movie night. So we actually had a really nice meal with adult conversation. I am super glad that I polished the hutch because that was the first thing they noticed!
But now that I think about it all-why do I scramble to have everything perfect for people that I don't do much with? And why is it that the more we get to know people the less perfect our home has to be for them to visit? That may just be me, but I find it interesting at any length. Needless to say, it was a nice meal and I have some chicken cordon bleu left over!

How fun! Sounds like your hard work paid off. I don't understand the hustle to get things in order for guests either. In fact, Jeff tells me to have people over more often, it seems to be the only time I clean now. Let me know when you figure out why we do that.
That is really interesting how the better we know someone the less we need to get ready for them. I think it is because we feel like we don't need to impress them as much. Sounds like a lot of work.
I found your blog through a friend of a friend and so on. I am glad to see all is well. I can't believe you have four kids. Crazy you only had one when you left SLC. If you want to check us out our blog is whatmenliveby.blogspot.com
oh my gosh! I feel your pain, I scrambled today rushing around cleaning like a maniac because my friend was dropping Kate off from a play date and had never seen my house before but then she ended up not even being able to come in because her baby was crying and I was exhausted! Oh well, at least my house was a little cleaner!
